About Jesse
Award-winning singer, songwriter, musician and actor Jesse Moore has
traveled the world performing on concert and theatrical stages.
Motion picture and television aficionados will recognize his face for
his portrayals of bureaucrats, legal and medical professionals, or
homeless people in a myriad of productions.
Jesse began his music career by winning the famed
Apollo Theater
Talent Night Contest, at the tender age of twelve, singing Smokey
Robinson's WHO'S LOVING YOU. The win gained him a recording contract
with Star Records and a manager, who had connections with the emerging
rock and roll writers at the famed
Brill
Building in New York.
Jesse
soon began recording demos, and his vocal prowess was put to the test
performing the 'girl' parts, in songs that were being written by
writers, that included Carole King, Gerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.
Being around such great writers was a huge influence on him and
soon he began to compose his own material. While still in his teens,
he joined The Stereos and as lead singer wrote and recorded an album
on MGM Verve Records, produced by the legendary Tom Wilson of Bob
Dylan and Frank Zappa fame.
Jesse's music then led him to a more exotic location: Tokyo, Japan. He
and nine other Americans formed the the legendary R&B band,
The Houserockers. They were soon signed by
RCA Victor of Japan Records and
recorded five albums, including the hit LOVE MAKES YOU HAPPY. In the
early 70's, he and Carlton "Slim" Goodwin put together a new group,
Black Fire, which toured extensively in the Far East, Australia
and New Zealand. Upon the band's dissolution he traveled to Bali and
joined Prophecy, which went on to become the first western band
to achieve superstar status in the Far East. Combining musicians from
the two groups, armed only with acoustic instruments, off they headed
into the non-electric fruit forest jungles of Malaysia. Soon they
landed a six-month stint in Singapore at Barbarella's and later
opened
their own successful nightclub, Electric Shadow, in Bangkok. In
2000,
the rockers reunited for a reunion tour of Indonesia, also filming
BACK IN THE GARDEN:A BALI ROCKUMENTARY.
Upon returning to the United States and settling in San Francisco, he
recreated Prophecy, recorded new product and toured up and down the
West Coast. Deciding to leave the group to develop his solo act, he
also entered college to major in music and theatre, eventually
receiving a scholarship to the prestigious American Conservatory
Theatre. Soon, his smooth vocals landed him major roles in legitimate
theatre, in local and regional productions of the musicals DAMES AT
SEA, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR and creating the role of Orpheus in the
Crossroads Theatre production of BLACK ORPHEUS, in New York. He also
joined the San Francisco Mime Troupe, touring the world in SECRETS IN
THE SAND and DRAGON LADY'S REVENGE, which won them a Tony Award, in
1987, for 'Excellence in Regional Theatre' and culminated in another
tour, ending at the Kennedy Center, in Washington, D.C., with THE
MOZAMGOLA CAPER.

This led to major television appearances in network shows that
included NBC's LAW AND ORDER, FOX TV's AMERICA'S MOST WANTED and in
the daytime soaps AS THE WORLD TURNS and THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL,
as well as joining PBS' GHOSTWRITER as a series regular. Film
appearances include HBO's THE BABY SITTERS CLUB, HOWARD THE DUCK and
most recently THE NOVICE, with Alan Arkin and Frank Langella, and the
soon to be released PRIDE, starring Tom Arnold, Bernie Mac and
Terrence Howard, in which Jesse plays the father of the only girl on a
high school inner-city swim team.

In 1988, Moore, then living in San Francisco, was introduced to the
Crescent City and it's funky music. Years later, while living in
upstate New York, growing tired of the acting-audition process, and
during preparation for the Bali reunion tour, he decided to immerse
himself in the rich culture of New Orleans and write and record
THE
HOODOO MAN in 2003. The success of the CD found him relocating to
the city of his inspiration, playing on Bourbon Street and every major
club in the city, as well as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage
Festival and the French Quarter Festival. The limited release
garnered rave reviews, "…stirs up a gumbo of roots rock, rhythm &
blues, Mardi Gras second line rhythms and funk-fried bayou magic,"
stated Indie Magazine and Offbeat Magazine proclaimed, "…displays a
dizzying array of styles…he wants you at his party and…you'll want to
be there."
In 2005, his release of MORE THAN LIFE ITSELF, was lauded as
"One of
the Top 10 CD's of the year," by The Times-Picayune and Tom Morgan of
WWOZ Radio noted, "…a grand collaboration with some of New Orleans'
best songwriters and musicians." The CD included an acoustic and
classic rock version of Anders Osborne and J. Ragsdale's IT'S GONNA
BE OKAY, and during a broadcast of TV 4's Eyewitness News on WWL,
reporter Eric Paulsen commented, "(the song)…should be the official
post-Katrina anthem."
His most recent CD, 2010's Wilson and Moore: Side by Side on Threadhead Records, is a collaboration with singer/songwriter/guitarist Chip Wilson. The rootsy folk n' blues Side by Side takes another step in the direction begun at the end of "The Hoodoo Man" and explored in depth in "More Than Life Itself": a desire to carve out a unique heartfelt musical-style that nurtures and challenges it's listeners.
Jesse now lives in the New Orleans Musicians' Village and continues to work in TV and film.
